L'hébreux âdâm signifie le terreux, et le premier homme a été créé à l'image de Dieu par Elohim ou tiré de la poussière par Yahvé, d'où son nom ('adâmâh, autrement dit le sol).
Les expressions formées sur son nom font allusion à l'état d'innocence, de dénuement, de nudité du Paradis terrestre, à l'époque reculée où il est censé avoir vécu.
